David Skal & The Universal Monsters
When home video became popular in 1999 the movie studios began to realize a potential new market for their enormous library of films to re-release on VHS tape and later on DVD.
That’s when each studio began releasing multiple film packages of their most successful film genres.
Warner Bros. made great gangster films, Disney had popular animated films and Universal made famous horror films.
Universal decided to release a set of six of their most popular horror films including a special documentary of “the making of” for each film produced by the well known documentary filmmaker David Skal.
David engaged me to create a brief title sequence for each film. Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, The Wolf man, The Invisible Man and The Bride of Frankenstein.
The ‘making of’ films documented the details of using the filmmaking processes and equipment from the era of their making.
Because of the great detail and historical accuracy of these short documentaries, I became intrigued with limiting my designs to using only the methods, styles and animation cameras that were available back then to create authentic, stylistically accurate designs true to the era.
They ultimately complimented the films they introduced and fit in perfectly with each opening presentation. David and I were very pleased.
